The pretty village of Coltishall, mentioned in the Domesday book, was a thriving commercial centre between the 16th and 19th century, with lots of malt houses and a loading point for wherries travelling on the River Bure. Many of the Wherries were built here. The river trade declined with the coming of the Railway in 1879 and navigation beyond Coltishall became impossible when the lock gates at Horstead were destroyed by flood in 1912. An RAF Station was situated a few miles from the village but has recently been disbanded. 
The village boasts 3 pubs and a hotel as well as the Recruiting Sergeant public house in nearby Horstead. You will find all the essential shops here including a pharmacy and a petrol filling station. There is water and electricity available riverside and there are public toilets adjacent to the Kings Head. Also next to the Kings head is the Post Office & general stores
Coltishall is home to St. John the Baptist a fine old Norfolk church with thatched roof of Norfolk reed.

 Ghosts
The headless ghost of Sir Thomas Boleyn can be seen once a year on the 19th May, the anniversary of his daughter's execution. He can be seen driving his phantom coach over the bridge in Coltishall.

A headless hound is also reported to cross the bridge once every night.
