Acle was a coastal fishing port in Saxon times, but as the land was reclaimed the River Bure formed, and by 1101 there was a reference to the Weybrigg at Acle. The term brigg was an old term meaning crossing point, bridge or sometimes ford. The first stone bridge was built circa 1830 and was a 3 arch stone bridge supported by oak piles. The bridge was replaced in the 1930's by a single span concrete one, but by the 1990's this bridge was subsiding due to heavy traffic, so the current bridge replaced it in 1997.
